curriculum
The curriculum at Health Enrichment Center, Inc. (HEC, Inc.) for the Therapeutic Massage Program is designed to best prepare the student for the variety of work environments available for the practice of therapeutic massage. The textbooks used are Mosby's Fundamentals of Therapeutic Massage, Third Edition and Mosby's Essential Sciences, Second Edition.
Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology
This general education prepares the student to understand benefits of massage and lays the foundation for the following section. Non-western science content is primarily focused on traditional Chinese medicine but does also cover other energy systems such as Shiatsu and Ayurveda. Program time allocated to this content section is generally 30 percent of the program.
Clinical Pathology and Recognition of Various Conditions and Indications and Contraindications for Massage Application Program
Time allocated to this content section is generally 20 percent of the course.
Massage Therapy and Bodywork: Theory Assessment and Application
Competency in this area teaches the student to appropriately apply methods in a safe and beneficial way. There is a commonality in most bodywork approaches. The content in this area covers various forms of assessment and interviewing methods to obtain the client's information. The information obtained from assessment then becomes the basis for application of safe and sanitary practices and enhances the appropriate choices of methods to be applied.
About 40 percent of the course is allocated to this content with about 15 percent of this devoted to complimentary bodywork modalities such as hydrotherapy, oriental theory and application such as acupressure, trigger points, connective tissue massage, etc.
Professional Standards, Ethics and Business Practices
About 10 percent of the course is allocated to this area. The professional standards and ethics and business practice area develops professional abilities to interact with clients, peers, and other professionals. Included in this content is ethical behavior, inter-professional communication, basic business operational practices, record keeping for both business and client records and an understanding of scope of practice.
